    Yes, indeed, but its also trivial to patch Emacs to run non-free
    extensions today.

It is not trivial for most people.

    Is the real issue that the GPL doesnt inhibit soft linking of non-free
    modules? I always assumed the GPL didnt allow for this. 

There is no clear simple answer to the question,
and that is why I don't want to run the risk.
