I recommend reading
(info "(autoconf) Limitations of builtins")

It would be marvellous if somebody managed to heed _all_ of the
incompatibilities by chance first time round for non-trivial scripts.

And that's just the shell: the autoconf setup requires quite a larger
set of utilities.
