    The fact that you need to type C-j instead of RET when creating a buffer
    does not seem such a huge imposition, it if makes selecting buffers much
    easier for everyone else (assuming we don't find a better solution).

I agree that typing C-j instead of RET for this case is not hard.
It is, however, a complication.  If you know how to use the minibuffer,
you can use the ordinary C-x b command to do whatever you like.
The iswitchb interface doesn't show you that you should use C-j for this.

    I don't buy that "power user" argument.  It is not dissimilar to the UI
    that you get nowadays when typing a URL in a browser.

It doesn't look anything like a file browser window.  iswitchb output
is cryptic and short.  That is convenient for the people who like it,
but does not help beginners understand, as a file browser window does.

    Perhaps if you say what is unclear, then it can be improved, or
    something better can be developed.

The problem is fundamental, and I don't think it can be fixed
without making iswitchb inconvenient for the people who like it.
