as a person considering to enter into emacs development one day, this
really is an important step.
I did a fairly complete audit last week of DVCS solutions that could
suit emacs need, and it turned out that, both from the technical point
of view, and for the emacs people tastes, bzr and hg (mercurial) meet
requirements and are almost indistinguishable products. Darcs is an
other one, fairly different, but mature and written in Haskell.
