Hmm... Seeing how other programs that deal with thumbnails also do
"convert to a new file", it looks like that example isn't very
compelling: it would require not just the ability to scale an image, but
also to then save (i.e. re-encode, compressed in a format like png or
jpeg) it. Running `convert' doesn't sound that bad of an idea in this
case (especially you can run several `convert' processes at the same
time, benefitting from multi-cores).
