python.el is developed and maintained (outside of the Emacs repository!)
by Dave Love.  The presence of those 2 versions is undesirable and only
caused by the fact that we didn't have the required legal paperwork for
python-mode.  So anything that can bring the two modes closer is good,
as long as we can keep it in the Emacs repository (i.e. as long as those
changes come with appropriate copyright paperwork).
