Well, in my system both commands are ok too. By "using ?\u21b5 in blank mode" I meant putting ?\u21b5 in blank-display-mappings like: (?\n [?\u21b5 ?\n] [?$ ?\n]) When blank-mode is on using the setting above, instead of appear ↵ at the end of line (\n) it appears an empty rectangle box at the end of line. Usually the empty rectangle box appears when Emacs recognizes the character but can't represent a character in the display screen. I have no glue why this is happening.
