Ispell fails on ttys after multi-tty merge

I am not certain at what point, but sometime after the merge with 
multi-tty the following started happening:

ispell-word (M-$) works fine, until you pick a replacement word for 
your misspelled word.  Then the replacement is inserted, but the 
original not deleted, at least not completely.

To reproduce:

emacs -nw -Q RET
blinke M-$

then pick 0, for the first alternative and what I see on the screen 
after ispell-word returns is:

blinklinke
