All this should be possible with Tramp 2.1, which is integrated in the
Emacs trunk.

Emacs 22.x won't be upgraded to Tramp 2.1 I suspect. So you must
either use Emacs 23.0.50 (that is the Emacs trunk from CVS), or
install Tramp 2.1 in parallel to Emacs 22.
