??? Do you really mean that if Emacs is configured without
"--enable-asserts" arg, this has no problem:

% emacs --enable-font-backend -fn "Dejavu Sans Mono-14"

but, this crashes:

% emacs --enable-font-backend

If so, how does it crash?  In the same was as the previous
report?
