    The problem was that ld failed to link temacs without any error
    message, and regenerating the configure script with a slightly
    different version of Autoconf mysteriously solved the problem,
    although I see no changes whatsoever except a few insignificant ones
    in the configure script itself.

It is quite mysterious, so I would suggest adding some echo statements
just before the ld command (in both cases), to verify the arguments
and environment.
