Hmm, maybe your card isn't supported well by ALSA.  What dou you have for
% cat /proc/asound/oss/sndstat
and
% cat /proc/asound/cards

?

You should see your card as device 0 in cards, and there should be a line 
saying "ALSA emulation" in the first.
