    I thought I would quickly try it out, but all the overlay defuns are in
    C code and it would require a fair bit of effort on my part to become
    familiar with the C mechanisms (how to set, get properties, invoke other
    defuns, etc.), and I dont have that much time.

If you want to try out such patches, I suppose someone here would be
willing to write the patches for you to try.
