build from CVS

Is there something special I have to do to the repository check out to 
get it to build? 
 
I tried when emacs cvs was first opened up, I couldn't get it to work 
then. 
 
I tried last night and it failed then too: because of abbrev.elc. I 
remember this happened the last time and I managed to fix it but then 
the build just went out recursively until make crashed. 
 
I presume I have to wave a dead chicken over autoconf or something. 
 
 
Anybody?
