Sounds good to me. We could make it look like that small widget many
GUI programs pop, with all the whizz-bang colors and version info,
before they open their main window.

But if you combine that with the suggestion of making the splash
screen a separate special frame, the problem you envision goes away:
the splash screen will show that Emacs is indeed starting up.

Windows uses the Registry instead of ~/.Xdefaults: you just put all
the entries in the Registry instead of the file. Don't know about
the Mac.
