If it is desirable to distinguish the printing format of
those characters in unibyte string and multibyte string, how
about using hexadecimal notation for multibyte string (e.g
"\x80").
Well, at present people can use hex notation for these characters
in a unibyte string, and maybe they do this. There's no logical
reason why hex should mean multibyte and octal should mean unibyte.
But I guess we could establish this as an arbitrary rule. If nobody
proposes a better solution, this might be better than failing to solve
the problem.
