CVS won't build :(

OK.  I have been trying to build CVS over the last few days with no success.
Always the same error:

Using load-path (/projects/emacs/lisp)
Loading byte-run...
Loading subr (compiled; note, source file is newer)...

Loading custom (compiled; note, source file is newer)...

Lists of integers (garbage collection statistics) are normal output
while building Emacs; they do not indicate a problem.
