It is *hard to reproduce* but lately I have noticed that

  C-M-i runs the command flyspell-auto-correct-word
  Correct the current word.
  This command proposes various successive corrections for the current word.

*sometimes* instead corrects a word way below the current word.
Therefore if one notes that repeated presses apparently do nothing, one
should look below to see if it is instead changing something else deep
in your document!
