Yes, that's the whole point of dvdrecord.
CD-Rs and DVD-Rs are pretty much the same thing; dvdrecord treats them the
same except there's more space on a DVD-R, and a DVD-R can be written only
in disc-at-once mode.

You can use mkisofs or mkudffs.

DVD-R and DVD-RW. No + stuff for now.

May or may not work. All tested drives are IDE DVD-RWs.
If it works as a SCSI drive, maybe "modprobe sg" will help you.
