If you want to run your backups by cron you can easily use a 'mount && backup; dismount' instead of backup alone. According to the user manual http://www.wdc.com/wdproducts/library/UM/ENG/4779-705006.pdf the device contains an ftp server. Enable it and use the ftp backend. ede/duply.net
