I didn't hack this, but my guess would be it's needed. But try for yourself.

Do a test backup.
Do an incr backup.
Do a remove to go back to the first backup, without the name parameter.
Now do a status on the test backup using the name parameter again.

The output should state that the cache is outdated and modified. Also you 
should see only the first backup.

btw. quick solution for you would be 
 not to set the option. then the cache would be created using unique hash of 
the backend url, which should be different over your backups.
