It probably is. Links are backed up as links. If you really want to backup what 
is behind a link you have to include the mount point.

It looks like anything under /boot wasn't included in the backup anyway.
The command list-current-files only lists "boot" but no file or
directory within it.

I'm now reinstalling the entire system anew and will then investigate
why the backup isn't complete in that regard.
