OK... it seems to me this extra flag (actually named --extra-clean, see
the rest of the thread) doesn't suit the needs I have exhibited.

At the moment, if I get it right, there doesn't seem to be an option to
simply remove incremental backups on the target backup space, of backup
chains whose full backups are older than a certain date.

So I've filed what should be a feature request and not really a bug
report in https://bugs.launchpad.net/duplicity/+bug/542482
