I'm not sure if that setting affects the tools.  On the tools, I think I
used the -z option on ncftpput to get the same affect.  The man page
does not mention using the settings.  Just don't know for sure.

As to scripting ncftp... I abandoned that for a couple of reasons, one
was that the messages sometimes changed between versions, and two was
that detecting an error vs just an unexpected info message was getting
way too involved.  The tools will at least output an error code if there
is a problem that needs attention.
