Try running:
$ strace ncftpput -f login.cfg-F -t 30 -o useCLNT=0,useHELP_SITE=0 \
 -m -V -C local_name remote_name

I'm beginning to think it may be something with the 64-bit version of
ncftpput.  I don't have that here, so I can't test it.  Thanks for all
the help so far.
