Straight FTP works fine, but I'm concerned about my username and
password being transported in plaintext across the internet, which is a
security risk.
Threats will not come from people who change or read those files (as
these are both signed and encrypted) but I'm worried about removal of my
secundary backup and illegal usage of the account by others.

I just dislike weak links in my security chain.
