Thanks, I know there must have been something much easier, below snippet now 
works 
like a charm:
        gnustepSystemApps = 
[NSSearchPathForDirectoriesInDomains(NSApplicationDirectory,
                                NSSystemDomainMask, YES) objectAtIndex:0];
