Hi
Sounds like it is your Debian update causing the problem. I am also on
cairo 1.10.2 but the additional number is 49.1 (OpenSuse 11.3 came
with 42.2, which wasn't working for me). You could try to pull a more
recent version of cairo (plus pixman, you always need both) from the
Debian unstable repository.
I'm already tracking unstable.

Which version of pixman are you using? I just checked a Debian
repository and there seems to be a newer pixman in experimental.

And then there is this bug report:

http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=613221

This seems to be exactly your problem. It has plenty of explaination,
but still no solution. At least you are not alone :-(

For those still interested by this bug (I just updated to Ubuntu 10.10
and hit the problem...), after reading the comments in this bug report I
compiled back --without-glx and it now works.

I thought the configure option would be --disable-glx. Which one is correct or do both work?
