Sorry for the late answer. Did not find time to play earlier.
I have just installed GNUstep after swiching to ubuntu, and did not run into
the problem you describe.
Platform: Athlon xp 2000, ubuntu 6.06 lts
My procedure in detail:
* required libs/tools:
$ sudo apt-get install make
the same for: gobjc-4.0 subversion libx11-dev libxft-dev libxext-dev
libxmu-dev libtiff4-dev libpng12-dev libungif4-dev libart-2.0-dev libxml2-dev
libxslt1-dev libssl-dev libgmp3-dev libffcall1-dev (must have enabled
"universe" repository)
* get sources
in my personal source directory
$ svn co http://svn.gna.org/svn/gnustep/modules
* build
$ cd modules/core/make
$ ./configure --prefix=/usr/lib/GNUstep (prefered by Debian people)
$ make
$ sudo make install
now "cd ../base" and again "make" and "sudo make install", same for gui and
back.
hope this helps...
