I still think that what is really needed is our "own" distribution. I go back and forth all the time on whether I should start working on simplyGNUstep again. It's not an easy thing to do though, I have a hard enough time finding the energy to work on the printing stuff in GNUstep after work work and school take their drain on me.

Personally, I don't believe another distribution would be good for the project. I honestly think packaging up for different distributions is still the proper way to go until we have enough people interested in helping sustain a larger project such as a distribution (or personally, what I'd be doing if I had enough folk to help out); a complete operating system (based off of OpenDarwin); or more accurately, in between complete independent development and a distribution of OpenDarwin. Reasons why I think this is a good choice well, can be debated with me off list if you wish.

Either way, I honestly think work people who have time should help out a bit more (this coming from someone who hasn't yet submitted anything of any use to the project, but it's on my TODO for when I have more time). Ie., finishing up AppKit, fixing bugs, etc. If more attention would be focused on actually making GNUstep more than a developers plaything, it would make more sense to shoot after the aforementioned (previous paragraph).

But this is just my two cents, not that it's worth a bag of beans.
