Not the same effect, but it doesn't work for me neither: On my machine (newest releases of GNUstep base libraries, Debian Sarge (not up to date)), it simply switches back to "center" after about a second when I try to choose anything else.

Well, I simply tiled my background using Gimp, however, a background image of 2800x1050 uses quite a lot of memory. ;)
