A quick note.
I tentatively installed gcc 3.4 bloatware on one of my non-production boxes.
besides the additional bloat... the problem persists :(
and if they tell you gcc 3.4 would be faster and consume less ram... well
take it that during a make -j 2 build I exhausted VM space. GRRR.
