I suppose the NSXMLParser class Apple have introduced with 10.3 isn't an
option here? Supposedly it's based on CF on Mac, so the API should be
pretty similar, and reimplementing it on GNUstep is probably something
that others may be interested in as well.
Just in case NSXMLParser slipped past your radar.
