Improv was a would-be spreadsheet successor, offering additional ways
of organizing tabular data.
Microsoft has drawn something somewhat similar into Excel, with the
notion of "Pivot tables."
The one problem with Improv was that it mandated building spreadsheets
in a structured manner, and people _are_ addicted to throwing data,
like spaghetti, at spreadsheets, and hoping it will stick.
