I'm a newbie, but I fell in love with
NeXTstep/Openstep a long time ago.
Regarding "Killer Apps"
Coming from a Windoze environment i KNOW what GNUstep
needs:
1) a WEB SITE DEVELOPMENT tool that rivals Dreamweaver
2) a music writing/editing/sequencing/notation suite
of apps that rivals Igor Engraver/Finale/SONAR
3) a ChessBase database-compatible app that will at
least import ChessBase files
4) a knock 'em dead WEB BROWSER (this should've been
done a LONG TIME AGO--how in the !@#$ is GNUstep going
to survive without a NATIVE WEB BROWSER????)
5) A FLASH/FLASH-compatible DEVELOPMENT
ENVIRONMENT!!!!!
6) an OFFICE PRODUCTIVITY SUITE that takes advantage
of Objective-C's AWESOME POWER!!!
7) A GAMING API to rival DIRECT-X
...just to name a few.
if we can come up with apps/libs in these seven areas,
GNUstep will prosper long after the HURD has replaced
the bloated Linux kernel.

i'm boning up on ObjC & Java with the hope of
porting/building Igor Engraver (written in LISP) to
GNUstep...because WE ALL KNOW that GNUstep is the best
damn thing out there!

LOL, have you tried it and or looked at it? It's
crap, doesn't bail
out when crucial things aren't present etc etc. I
wrote a sligtly
improved replacement but noone seems interested
enough to look at it.
So it seems like it was a big waste of my time.

Oh, pardon me. Did I forgot the <irony> tag? ;-P
Seriously, I don't consider this as a real problem.
When I first installed KDE version 1 (and the same
applies to the
first GNOME release) it was much more hassle that
GNUstep will ever be.
And things have gotten worse since then (for
compiling/installing KDE/GNOME).
The problem is than GNUstep is no replacement for
KDE/GNOME, since it
lacks applications, or at least one killer app
(don't ask me what kind
of application that could be).
The installation process is the last thing I worry
about ...

Exactly. That's why all distributions need
up-to-date,
completely-thought-out, easy-to-install packages in
the native
packaging format.
On the other hand, no one will give a sh*t,
whether GNUstep eventually
installs smoothly on Debian, Gentoo or
FlavourDistributionOfTheWeek if
there's nothing, no Tool, no Application, no nifty
Thing that draws
attention.
