To become more distro and even OS independant... why doesn't GWorkspace 
use a kind of HidePathVariable. Which is just a list of all paths to hide.
I know it is not as flexible and can be somewhat lengthy compared to the 
simple .hide solution, but it solves some of the issues raised.
