To become more distro and even OS independant... why doesn't GWorkspace use a kind of HidePathVariable. Which is just a list of all paths to hide. I know it is not as flexible and can be somewhat lengthy compared to the simple .hide solution, but it solves some of the issues raised.

With the exception of true GNUstep-centric distributions, I doubt that
we will see a /.hidden file in any distribution at all. Thus, it might
be a good idea to have a user-specific way to hide files/folders in the
root folder.
