I was thinking I can use a global flag and the main thread can mark the flag to let the array know it is obsolete (but may be it's dirty?) and so the compare method (in member instances) know it is obsolete.No it wouldn't be as the code doing the sorting has no way of knowing that 'self' (a variable) has become obsolete. I think you will probably need a custom subclass of NSArray which implements an invalidatin mechanism a sorting routine which uses it.
