I tried your suggestion and here are the results:

(1) The Appicon turned black.

(2) There is no real inprovement on speed. Displaying images is still
painfully slow as compared to non GNUStep programs like GQview, Image
Magick, and XV. Also, scrolling on large images is painfully slow.

This is with the CVS version of GNUStep as of Jan. 26, 2002.
