Unless the advantage is not for the end user, but for the maintainer of
the rpm packages.

The person packaging the application might have both the backends, and
build different rpms for the different backends more easily if we use a
deep structure...

Hmm... Not sure, I see no difference.

Adam, if you can, my suggestion is that you make some experiments before
deciding flat vs deep.

Main interesting thing to assess before deciding IMO is what advantages
would deep structure give for the standard linux user with a standard
linux distribution <after all, we are deciding flat vs deep for him/her>.  
If there are no advantages, then why use it.

In particular: 

 * will it help in shipping a single rpm for multiple platforms;

 * will it make easier to create different rpms for different platforms 
   on the same machine;

 * will it help users in keeping more than one backend;

 * will it make possible to create a single rpm for multiple backends;

 * will it make easier to create different rpms for different backends;

My impression is that it's not helping much in these areas, but trying it
out seems the only real way to be sure.

Perhaps keeping a little eye on debs too...
