I have succesfully built thrift 0.10.0 and the entire installation of gnuradio went smoothly on Ubuntu 18.04.

One think that was missing from the wiki:

I needed to install an additional package "pygraphviz"

which on ubuntu repos was  "python-pygraphviz" 

for the gr-perfomance-monitor application to run.
