AFAIK, Johannes' project is the only one that uses GNU Radio, but there's other stand-alone LTE projects, such as OpenAirInterface (http://www.openairinterface.org/) and libLTE (https://github.com/ismagom/liblte).
Using these is considered advanced usage, though -- I assume you know what you're doing, but just in case.
