would be largely bogus.Although it does sound like something isn't right if your system can't "hear" the cell phone from more than 1 meter away. Since i know that you're using OpenBTS, perhaps ask the OpenBTS folks what to expect from their application under various circumstances.
Generally, the RX cards are sensitive enough to provide similar "coverage" to what you'd expect from a similar hardware radio
with the same overall functionality.
