I hope this doesn't sound patronizing, but are you sure /usr (and /usr/lib) are writable? Can you do a "sudo touch /usr/local/testme"? From the error, it really does look like a simple permission problem.

Nah, not patronizing at all.

Turns out it was me after all. The home directory was NFS-mounted, and when libtool tried to do some in-place re-link as part of the install, it died, because it couldn't write the file (because root isn't root across NFS).

It's like these systems are set up to *deliberately* cause trouble :-)
