The dependency on Python 2.6 was somewhat arbitrary. The packages
supplied on gnuradio.org were designed only for Ubuntu 9.04, and
Python 2.6 is standard for that.

Bdale Garbee is working on modifying the packaging infrastructure to
be more flexible and work with Debian itself and other Debian
derivatives besides Ubuntu, as well as getting the packages accepted
back into Debian proper. I haven't heard an update from him recently
so I don't know the status.
