This would be a good project and not too tough.

Assume you've got something like the one of the cable tuner front
ends:  6 or 8 MHz IF, tunes across the band you're interested in.

I've looked at decoding the 800 MHz public safety band in my area.
They're running an EDACS system at about 859 MHz.  I should be able to
see all the channels at once. They're within 6 MHz of each other.
