GNU Radio could do this.  Point a directional antenna around, and have
the software change the screen color and patterns in realtime, based
on the frequencies it is currently detecting signals in.  Use the
thumb wheel to scroll up and down the frequency bands.  Sounds like a
weekend's hack for someone who already has the wideband PCI A-to-D
hardware up and running in a desktop machine.

Once Matt's USB interface is done, we could probably even do it on a
laptop.  Detecting energy in a band is much less computationally
intensive than, say, decoding HDTV...
