This comes up periodically.

The current thinking is that often you don't know ahead
of time that the file is large or the transport is slow,
and so an external utility to query the progress would
be a more general solution. I.E. something like:
https://github.com/Xfennec/progress

Also one can use rsync to get that functionality.
