On OSF/1 5.1, build with "make" fails:

Build with "gmake" succeeds.

But "gmake check" hangs:

$ gmake check

Stack overflow: pid 228123, proc ksh, addr 0x11effffd0, pc 0x3ff801c5018

Here I stopped it after a while. A ksh process had more than 170 MB.
