 Implicit expansion of ~ in filenames will be deprecated in 4.9.0 and
 removed in 4.10.0 (see #1001).  We've decided to implement the expansions
 in an egg (see http://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/chicken-
 hackers/2013-11/msg00077.html)
