[1] Some make check failures on tests that rely on the compiler output
    (C_noret is not defined as __attribute__ ((noreturn)) for clang).
    See #917.  With the patch in

    it works flawlessly.

[2] Works fine with DEBUGBUILD=1.  To be confirmed with DEBUGBUILD unset.
